- Old town – Koper, the Old Town at least, is one big sight. The joy of coming here is to wander its streets, often getting lost, mixing with locals, visitors and hoardes of day trippers. Old Town’s main street -if you can call it that – is Cevljarska, which is no more than two or three metres wide in places, and is packed from dawn to dusk when it, like most of Old Koper, disappears inside. Cevljarska leads up from Muda Gate to the town’s main square, Titov Trg, which is dominated by the bell tower of the St Mary’s of the Assumption Cathedral, visible from all over Koper.
- Architecture – The façades of the buildings and their interiors reveal the millennial history of Koper, once Capris, then Iustinopolis; and evoke the era of the Venetian Republic and the golden age of Gothic style and the Renaissance. Intertwining narrow streets wind towards the main square that boasts the largest cathedral in Slovenia. A diverse palette of cultural experiences enriches the city streets and squares, especially in the summer months.
- Try local cuisine – Istrian dishes are simple, and boiled rather than fried. Restaurants and inns both in Koper and even more so in the neighbouring villages and tourist farms offer typical local Mediterranean fare. Don’t forget to ask for a glass of traditional Istrian wine – Malvazija (white) and Refošk (red) are the best known – and try the local olive oil.
- Events- The streets and squares of Koper boast myriad cultural experiences that offer something for everyone. Many of these events have already become traditional and very popular with visitors from all over the world. Especially interesting are the various culinary festivals where you can try the most delectable local dishes and produce.
